Length: 5-days (40 hours)
Goal: Develop participant skills associated with curriculum development and their ability to accomplish classroom or scenario facilitation.
The General Instructor Development course is an intensive 40-hour hands-on course, with likely after-hour course preparation work. This 5-day course consists of 10 primary subject areas:
- Curriculum development
- Writing performance objectives
- The adult learner
- Facilitation strategies
- Presentation skills
- Creating learner-centric environments
- Use of training aids while managing the classroom
- Trainers liability
- Methods to accomplish participant engagement and promote learning
- Student practical application
From lesson plan development to classroom facilitation, this course is designed to develop participants into instructors/facilitators who can promote active-learning within their courses. Emphasis will be placed on creating learning environments that address cognitive, interpretive, and psychomotor-skill development. Each attendee will independently create curriculum, prepare a formatted lesson plan and then facilitate their developed course for evaluation within a 20-minute time frame.
Objectives. The students will:
- Create curriculum associated with an assigned topic
- Develop a lesson plan using a four-step process
- Conduct a task analysis in conjunction with their course design
- Write learning objectives containing an action verb and content area
- Distinguish variances between training, instruction and education
- Define learning
- Summarize principles of adult learning and learner-centric approaches
- Format a lesson plan consistent with APOST practices
- Facilitate a 20-minute training course based on their written lesson plan
- Demonstrate how to promote involvement and effectively “manage” the classroom
- Use learned techniques to enhance their overall communication skills
- Develop techniques to inspire and engage their students in active learning
- Name training resources and aids, and define their proper application in the classroom
- Design test questions that are clearly understood by their classmates
- Demonstrate excitement and energy in their training
- Compose an effective presentation opening
- Define techniques for capturing and holding audience attention
- Develop a plan for facilitating difficult discussions and working with challenging audiences
- Discuss instructor related liability and methods to manage associated risk
- Use vocal range, tone and body language to enhance presentations
- Write a closing to a presentation that inspires action
- Create question and answer periods that promote involvement
