Course: Leading and Managing the Frontline
Course Description: This course is intended to address the realistic day-to-day responsibilities of the Police front-line supervisor and personnel holding key positions of influence. Classroom activities have been designed to allow participants to analyze daily duties and to identify manageable challenges that often pull leaders away from their greatest asset – their people.
Objectives will address both leading and managing small squads/units/teams of officers.
Objectives:
• Complete an Everything DiSC® Management Profile (advance of course)
• Review coaching, delegation and employee developmental strategies
• Demonstrate an understanding of personality traits and their influence on team effectiveness
• Analyze and debate approaches to squad leadership and management
• Distinguish management from leadership
• Promote environments that instill continual training with shared responsibility
• Discuss squad related matters that sometime challenge front-line supervisors, such as:
– Staffing
– Ancillary duties
– Tracking of tasks and assignments
– Performance management issues
• Share various approaches to managing small units\squads\teams
• Discuss available systems and processes to track and monitor tasks
• Review career planning considerations as part of your employees’ development
• Identify leadership opportunities that exist during daily supervisor employee interactions
• Identify characteristics of outstanding teams
• Maximize roll-call time
• Enhance team cohesion and make work more enjoyable
• Reduce occurrence of re-visited topics
• Review methods to create full team engagement
• Recognize the factors that break down interpersonal communication and learn what to do about them
• Discuss historical studies associated with general performance management
• Review the Five Behaviors of Cohesive Teams
• Identify methods for giving effective feedback and facilitating team debriefs
• Create environments in which team members engage in the constructive debate of ideas
• Establish a setting where team members are more likely to commit to decisions
• Hold one another accountable to clear plans of actions that accomplish measurable results
• Apply learning through simulated team discussions
